Location:
Just 19 km off the coast of Perth, lies the sunny paradise island of Rottnest. Blessed with a casual atmosphere, incredible marine life and some of the world's finest beaches and bays. Rottnest Island is Western Australia's very own island retreat. Rottnest Island is an island just off the coast of Western Australia, located 18 kilometres west of Fremantle. The island covers approximately 19 square kilometres in land area, and is managed by the Rottnest Island Authority under a separate act of parliament.
Weather:
Rottnest Island enjoys the same Mediterranean climate as Perth. It is usually a few degrees cooler in the height of summer and enjoys warmer winters with less rainfall compared to the mainland.

Fauna:
Quokka: The quokka is the most well-known animal on Rottnest Island. They are best known for their ‘smiling’ face, hence the nickname 'The Happiest Animal on Earth’. Quokkas are generally nocturnal and spend most of the day sleeping and relaxing under shady bushes. On the island they can be seen eating during the day. The quokka’s diet consists of grass, leaves, seeds and roots.

It is important for visitors to not feed the quokkas and other animals on the island. Quokkas can become very ill from eating unsuitable food such as bread, chips and meat. |
Birds: Rottnest Island's wetlands and coastal areas provide necessary food resources and breeding habitats for a number of shorebird species. Shorebirds that are commonly seen around Rottnest Island include the osprey, silver gulls, crested tern, fairy tern, rock parrot and eastern reef egret.
Reptiles: There are seventeen species of lizards that have been recorded on Rottnest Island. These include two types of geckos, two types of legless lizards and thirteen types of skinks. Commonly sighted lizards are the Bobtail, King's Skink, Marbled Gecko, West Coast Ctenotus and Burton's Legless Lizard.
Snakes: There are two species of snakes currently on the Island, the Southern Blind Snake and the Dugite. The Southern Blind Snake is a non-venomous burrowing snake, however the Dugite is a slender, dark brown venomous snake.

Dugites are timid and non-aggressive, however they should always be treated with respect and caution as they're a venomous snake!

Safe Travel & Tips:
Visitors should always wear a wide brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt, sunglasses and at least an SPF 15+ sunscreen when outdoors. It is recommended that you drink at least or more than two litres of water each day. Take further care when outdoors between 10:00am - 3:00pm, as UV radiation is most intense. Take cover in the shade to protect your skin from skin cancer and other sun damage. The sun here in summertime is extremely hot. Be aware of the sun here in Australia, as it is more severe than other countries. Whenever you come from the water always re-apply the sunscreen even if it is a waterproof type as they wash off.

At the beach?

-If you get into trouble in the water, don't panic - signal for help, float and wait for assistance.
-Float with a rip current, don’t try to swim against it
-The red and yellow flags on the beach mark the supervised area of the beach and that it is safe to swim. Lifeguards patrol the beach when the flags are up. If there are no flags then you shouldn’t go swimming.

Rottnest Island Bike Hire: Discover Rottnest Island by bicycle. What better way to discover the island than by bike? As Rottnest Island has no cars, cycling is one of the best means of transport on the Island.
Rottnest Island Country Club: With multiple teeing positions on every 9 holes providing golfers an enjoyable experience either playing an intermediate game of 9 holes or an advanced game of 18. In addition to the course, lies an artificial lawn bowling green with a licensed clubhouse and full function facilities.
Just 4 Fun Aqua Park: Climb, jump, slide and splash at Just 4 Fun Aqua Park. This inflatable floating Water Park based in Thomsons Bay is great fun for all ages and includes a Kids Knee-Deep Park for the little ones. (Under 7-yrs)
