Location:
The world Heritage listed Lord Howe Island is located 660 km off the north coast of NSW. Sitting in the Tasman Sea this island is less than two hours’ flight from Sydney or Brisbane. Only 11 km long and 2 km wide, two thirds of its land mass is covered by Banyan, Pandanus and native Kentia Palm forests and its many perfect beaches are safe, pristine and serene. The crystal waters that thrive in marine life includes over 400 species of fish, 90 species of coral of which 4% is unique to this Island.

Weather:
Lord Howe Island’s climate is mild all year round. Sea breezes prevent the summers from being too hot, while the warm seas surrounding the island ensure enjoyable winters. Maximum temperatures on the island during summer are around 25ºC (77ºF), falling to an average of 19ºC (66ºF) during winter. Daily minimums range from 20ºC (68ºF) in summer and around 12-14ºC (54-57ºF) in winter. |
Fauna:
Due to the great distance of Lord Howe Island from any large landmass, larger animals, apart from birds, do not live on this island.
Birds: Bird species that are commonly seen on Lord Howe Island are: The Emerald Ground Dove, Sacred Kingfisher, and Buff Banded Landrail. Two endemic species are the Woodhen and the Lord Howe Island White eye, and two endemic subspecies: the Currawong and the Golden Whistler.
Flora:
Ferns: Lord Howe Island has 56 species of ferns. These range from the small 2cm high Adder's tongue fern, to tree ferns with trunks that extend to ten metres tall.

Orchids: The orchid family is the largest family of flowering plants in the world. Lord Howe Island has 12 orchid species native to the island.
